Large Mixed Media Paintings

These pieces range from 3'x5.5', 3'x4', 2'x4' and some smaller works that are no smaller than 18"x24". Each piece starts with hand-stretched raw canvas, and sometimes a clear gesso is applied. Then, a simple line embroidery is stitched using black waxed linen bookbinding thread to the raw canvas (clear gesso applied after the sewing in those instances). I then go in with color using water-mixable oil paint, applying it in thin watered-down layers to create a watercolor effect in areas and building it up to a more opaque finish in others. In some works, I use oil bars to get a softer or denser texture. These pieces showcase an individual or "family" of tree-like forms juxtaposed with a multitude of flora and fauna in surreal situations. Color and texture are used in specific ways to guide the viewer to experience each piece from a different emotional perspective. The elements in each piece reflect human relationships with the self, each other, and with nature.
